As a church planter, I can no longer tolerate with “not-so-faithful” leaders filled with pride and negative criticism.

Church planting is all about exercising faith and sacrifice.

Faith without action is no faith.

God seeks servants who are filled with proactive mindsets, passionate hearts, good characters, fruits of the Holy Spirit and positive perspectives to plant His church.

Mosaics Timeline:

• The COM of the Presbytery of Sacramento, PC(USA) approved the Rev. Dr. Stephen Moon to be a member-at-large on its meeting on September 26, 2013, to start working as an evangelist for the Millennials (aka Mosaics).

• The Presbytery of Sacramento voted to accept the Rev. Dr. Stephen Moon into its membership at the Stated Meeting of the Presbytery on November 12, 2013.

• The first community outreach program, “Korean Class for Mosaics (KCM)” launched on November 16, 2013 at Pastor Moon’s house in Elk Grove, CA.

• Fellowship of Mosaics was officially approved as a “New Worshiping Community (NWC)” by the Administrative Commission for New Worshiping Communities (ACNWC) of the Presbytery of Sacramento on Feb. 18, 2014, and by the Mission Development Resources Committee (MDRC) of the Presbyterian Mission Agency, PC(USA) on March 21, 2014 (Project #1418).

• Congregational Support Committee awarded the “Durable Equipment Joint Acquisition Fund” for the purchase of our musical instruments and speaker system on March 18, 2014.

• Fellowship of Mosaics secured its first temporary worship gathering place at the Parkview Presbyterian Church (727 T Street) and started gathering from June 14, 2014.

• Fellowship of Mosaics completed the mandatory “discernment process,” the leadership Bible study and prayer meetings on September 7, 2014.

• Fellowship of Mosaics started the “Second-Term Korean Language and Cooking Class for Mosaics” since June 2014. The “Basic Russian Class” started from September 2014 and the “Basic French Class” started from November 2014.

• Fellowship of Mosaics was officially approved to receive the “New Church Development (NCD) First-Level Grant” during the month of October, 2014 by the Presbytery of Sacramento and the Mission Development Resources Committee (MDRC) of the Presbyterian Mission Agency, PC(USA).

• Fellowship of Mosaics started the Mandarin Chinese and the guitar classes from February 2015.

• Rev. Dr. Stephen Moon started language classes and instrumental class at Davis Community Church from March 14, 2015.

• The Session of Davis Community Church approved the Rev. Dr. Stephen Moon to lead a New Worshiping Community, “Davis Mosaics” (with Mosaic Tea & Coffee) on April 21, 2015 to outreach the Millennials in Davis, CA.

• Pastor Moon started Davis Mosaics Fellowship officially from April 2015 at the 2nd Floor Rooms of Phoenix Hall at Davis Community Church. Currently, Davis Mosaics offers 6 language classes, acoustic music classes, and cooking classes on Saturdays to reach out Millennials living in Fairfield, Vacaville, Davis and Sacramento Metropolitan Area.

• Davis Mosaics was officially approved as a “New Worshiping Community (NWC)” by the Administrative Commission for New Worshiping Communities (ACNWC) of the Presbytery of Sacramento on October 13, 2015.

• Davis Mosaics & Mosaics Tea & Coffee held their first community dining event, Mosaic Feast” with Chéf Seonkyoung Longest on October 9, 2015.

• Davis Mosaics was approved by the Mission Development Resources Committee (MDRC) of the Presbyterian Mission Agency, PC(USA) on November 20, 2015 as an official New Worshiping Community (Project #1551).

• Fellowship of Mosaics started gathering at Faith Presbyterian Church on June 5, 2016.

• Rev. Dr. Stephen started coaching session with Rev. Perry Sakai from May 3, 2018.

• Davis Mosaics started Davis Community Drum Circle on October 4, 2018.

• Fellowship of Mosaics started gathering at Davis Community Church together with Davis Mosaics from March 2, 2019.

• Fellowship of Mosaics merged into Davis Mosaics officially from April 1, 2019.

• Mosaics converted all physical classes and meetings to Zoom platform on March 27, 2020 due to COVID-19 outbreak.

• Congregational Support Ministry Team of the North Central California Presbytery approved our transformed identity to be recognized as, “Intercultural Mosaics” on July 20, 2021.

• Intercultural Mosaics became a Matthew 25 church in the PC(USA) in 2023.

• Mosaics proudly earned the prestigious designation of a “Matthew 25 church,” along with a thoroughly deserved certificate, on September 11, 2023.

• Mosaics joyously marked a decade of success, celebrating its remarkable 10th anniversary on November 18, 2023.

Mosaics Vision Statement:

Intercultural Mosaics is driven by a deep love for God and a heartfelt commitment to building genuine connections and understanding among people. We seek to move beyond traditional church practices, embracing a richer spiritual faith that recognizes the beauty of cultural diversity. Our focus is on creating welcoming spaces where multi-ethnic Millennials and Gen Zers can feel a true sense of belonging, unity, and spiritual renewal. We believe that God is always with us (Immanuel), and we understand that many young people are yearning for a relationship with the Divine outside the walls of traditional institutions. By fostering authentic koinonia (Acts 2:42-47), we celebrate our diverse backgrounds and offer meaningful opportunities for these generations to contribute to the greater good.

Our vision is for Intercultural Mosaics to blossom into a denominational movement, starting in Northern California and reaching across the nation. We see the incredible potential of this model to equip congregations to thrive in our multicultural world. By partnering with the New Ministry Initiatives Committee of NCCP, we strive to make this movement scalable, sustainable, and impactful. With God’s love, grace, and salvation as our foundation, we aim to empower Millennials and Post-Millennials as transformational leaders and harvest workers (Luke 10). Mosaics Mission Statement

At Intercultural Mosaics, we believe in moving beyond institutionalized church practices to cultivate a spiritual faith that emphasizes genuine connections and mutual understanding. Christianity is not merely about confessions; it’s an invitation to build friendships, foster loving relationships, and create vibrant communities. Our mission is to restore the authentic koinonia of the early Christian movement, where believers encounter God daily, share life together, and enjoy the favor of all people (Acts 2:42-47).

We focus on Millennials and Post-Millennials in the Sacramento Metropolitan Area, helping them experience God’s love, grace, and salvation through meaningful koinonia filled with agape, healing prayers, and transformational experiences. Our goal is to empower these younger generations as harvest workers of Christ (Luke 10), transforming their communities into places rich with faith, hope, and love.

Initiatives:

Leader Development: We are committed to equipping and training leaders from churches across the presbytery in intercultural ministry practices, nurturing a spirit of collaboration and growth. This initiative embodies the principles of Matthew 18, where we encourage accountability and reconciliation among leaders to foster unity within the Body of Christ.
Workshops and Retreats: We host engaging events designed to foster intercultural dialogue, build bridges between congregations and the broader community, and encourage acts of service. Inspired by Matthew 25, these gatherings will emphasize serving the least among us, promoting compassion and justice as central tenets of our faith.
Ministry Hubs: Our vision includes establishing pilot congregations that serve as inspiring models for intercultural renewal and growth. These hubs will focus on creating safe spaces for open conversations, conflict resolution, and the celebration of diversity, reflecting the teachings of Matthew 18 regarding community and restoration.
Resource Toolkits: We develop and share practical toolkits filled with best practices for intercultural ministry, empowering churches to replicate this transformative model in their own contexts. These resources will include guidance on outreach to marginalized communities, aligning with Matthew 25’s call to serve the hungry, thirsty, and those in need.

Mosaics: Shaping Community for the 21st Century

Rev. Dr. Stephen Moon’s leadership journey has been profoundly guided by three enduring principles: flexibility, humility, and patience, all rooted in the compassionate spirit of Christ. One verse that resonates deeply with these principles is Colossians 3:12, which reminds us to “clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” This scripture encapsulates the essence of his approach, emphasizing the importance of empathy and understanding in leadership.

In his career, Dr. Moon has steadfastly adhered to the belief that there are two kinds of individuals: those who offer support and those who criticize. He has chosen to align his efforts with those who support him, while also extending compassion and understanding to all. Flexibility has allowed him to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of leadership, while humility has fostered an environment of continuous learning, both from supporters and critics alike. Patience has served as a cornerstone in navigating challenges with a gentle and enduring spirit.

Furthermore, Dr. Moon’s leadership journey intertwines with the mission of Intercultural Mosaics, a project he holds dear. This initiative is driven by compassion, echoing Christ’s message of love and inclusivity, as reflected in Romans 15:7: “Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.” With Intercultural Mosaics, we aspire to restore the ancient hospitality of Jesus, promoting inclusivity and evangelism to reach the unchurched. Through these principles and the compassionate teachings of the Bible, we strive to create a harmonious and welcoming environment, where the support we receive is matched by the compassion we extend to others, ultimately leading us toward remarkable outcomes.

Vision:

Moved by a love of Christ, Mosaics brings fresh expressions of the Body of Christ to meet the spiritual needs of multi-ethnic Millennials and Gen Zers so that they can be transformed for Christ’s ministries of compassion, justice, peace, healing and environmental stewardship for the world.

Missions:

1) Continue growing a learning, caring, transforming, spiritual community with “koinonia” to disciple Millennials and Gen Zers for the 21st century ministries (Mosaics original mission).

2) Creating missional ecosystem in inherited churches to become missional hubs for intercultural people (Ezekiel’s vision).

3) Breaking boundaries to expand territories of intercultural ministries for local and worldwide evangelism (Jabez’s vision).

Challenge:

We are living in unprecedented times. With rising oceans and increasing human tensions, our planet and all we hold dear is in peril. Though there have been crises throughout human history, we now inhabit a time in which the very future of our species and the planet, itself, is in question. Throughout the world, the realities of greed, oppression, hatred, disease and violence have distorted and deformed the natural world and brought untold suffering (physical, mental and spiritual) to the human community. Such pain might lead to despair, but we have reasons for hope. Human beings may have hastened the peril, but we also have the power to heal and shape a just and more peace-filled future.

What makes Mosaics unique:

In an age of disaffiliation and non-affiliation with religious institutions, Mosaics, is charting the pathway into the future of Christianity—deeply embodied and incarnational, post-doctrinal, inclusive, artistic, and sacramental in the truest sense of the Word—a gathered people and a sign of God’s dream (or intention) for the world.

How does Mosaics respond to this challenge?

Mosaics builds bridges, innovates lavishly, meets practical needs, and works cooperatively on behalf of God’s dream for the world’s wellbeing. Mosaics’ practices of radical hospitality, multicultural fellowships, and a sacramental way of life—low-bar religiosity and high-bar community. Centered around table fellowship, learning and fostering the common good, Mosaics is a witness to the pathway of the early Christians who moved souls from belonging into behavioral shifts and belief.

How Mosaics got here:

Mosaics began its journey in 2013. The journey focused on intense social media and person-to-person outreach to Millennials. Thousands of people have been reached. More than 1,500 have visited Mosaics and experienced radical hospitality and genuine love. They have engaged with others through learning languages, cultures, food, music and fellowship. Rev. Dr. Moon became a part of their lives through pastoral care, coaching, counseling and prayer.

The Presbyterian Church (USA), the Presbytery of North Central California, Davis Community Church, and individual donors have encouraged and supported Mosaics with time, grants, prayer, facilities and staff support.

Signs of Influence:

Pre-pandemic; more than 1,200 people came across a church campus to explore Mosaics. 3-7 new visitors came weekly, 1 out of 3 return, and 1 out of 10 become active in the community.

During the pandemic, 300 new people participated in online classes.

Today there are 120 active participants in Mosaics from more than 25 ethnicities. 90% of participants are non-white.

An average of 55 people attend Mosaics weekly. Special events draw more than 80 people.

Prayer is a regular part of the ministry. Communion is available bi-monthly for those who choose to partake.

A Leadership Team has developed. Bible study, spirituality classes, drum circles, meditation and hiking are offered.

There have been four marriages, two baptisms, and more are in the wings.

What we know about generations under 40:

They are hungry for community, belonging and learning. They have a spiritual hunger but are not religious. They reject traditional church. Doctrine, rules, process, pews make them feel trapped. Millennials want to experience God outside of the church box. They want spiritual freedom.

Mosaics Spirituality Formation

Traditionally, Church has understood following 6 themes as its missions[1]:

1. A prayer-filled life
2. A holy and virtuous life
3. A Spirit-empowered life
4. A compassionate or just life
5. A Word-centered life
6. A sacramental life

However, Dr. Scot McKnight urges that we, the Church, as a “salad bowl,” should embrace different genders, socioeconomic groups, races, cultures, music styles, artistic styles, moral histories, forms of communication, ages involved, martial statuses because God designed the church to be a “fellowship of difference and differents” from the beginning—becoming Church’s biggest challenge now. We also agree with him how important it is to our Church (mostly shaped and maintained with traditional concept of mono-gender, mono-socioeconomic group, mono-race, mono-culture and mono-theology), to become transformational and missional community comprising following 7 merits of Christian life[2]:

1. Christian life as a fellowship
2. Christian life as a social revolution
3. Christian life as a life together
4. Christian life as transcending difference
5. Christian life as honoring difference
6. Christian life as enjoying difference
7. Christian life as love, justice, and reconciliation

We continue to become a “fellowship of difference and differents” as our utmost mission is to transform Millennials (aka Mosaics) and GenZ to experience God’s grace, love, holiness and purpose in their lives, so that they may be ultimately transformed to be Christ’s faithful disciples and evangelists.

Mosaics Discipleship

Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples” (John 8:31). In response to the question of “what is the greatest commandment in the Law?,” Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matt. 22:36-39).

We offer weekly Bible study and meditation, small group fellowships, and person-to-person counseling. Many mosaics leaders are being trained in intercultural settings. We hope to see many disciples birthed from our intercultural discipleship. Stephen and Grace are constantly praying for everyone who belongs to Mosaics and they reach out to those who are in need of prayers and pastoral counseling through social media and face-to-face meetings.

Our ultimate goal is that our regular participants becoming disciples of Christ. This requires life-changing transformation through faith and obedience to the Word of God. Mosaics seeks to make disciple-making disciples through our koinonia and spirituality formation classes.

“Pastor Stephen Moon, the driving force behind Mosaics, a faith-based meetup, has been a mentor and teacher to many in the community. Mosaics holds open meetings for a range of topics from language classes in ten different areas to music and guitar lessons to my favorite, Bible Study. Dr. Moon has a tight grip on the meaning behind the stories and always offers a fresh, modern perspective on these old stories. He also sheds new light on the meanings of some of the different translations through the use of his understanding of ancient languages. Another great thing about the Mosaics group is their dinners. Grace Moon and a few others come early to make delicious food every Saturday and Sunday night in Davis and Greenhaven respectively. In the past few months, the Greenhaven group has been closed down due to budget concerns, but hopefully it can be rekindled in the near future. “Find a friendly face in the crowd” is said to many when they are scared to give a public speech. I was asked to be a Spanish substitute teacher at Davis Mosaics by my sister-in-law. I have battled with anxiety my whole life, so this would be a good challenge for me. I agreed, although I have never taught before. Upon my arrival, I was greeted by Stephen and Grace with open arms as if I were a family member who they missed and had finally come home. I stood in front of the class, all eyes on me. I could barely breathe. I looked up to see Stephen smiling at me, with his thumb up. I took a deep and started my lesson. By the end I was given feedback by those who attended my class that they enjoyed it. Soon enough I was the regular Spanish teacher. This was the first step to my life changing. During this time of my life, I didn’t have a place to call home for my two children and me. I was lucky enough to have a brother who allowed my little family borrow their space until I figured out what to do next. I found an apartment in Davis after much research and comparison of nearby schools and communities. In my opinion, a good education and love are two of the best gifts a parent could give their children. I was giving this to them but was struggling financially. I needed to find a less expensive home in Davis or move somewhere different where my kids’ education and peace of mind would be at stake. The Cannery was being built and they were building affordable apartments where rent amount would be based on income. It was a long shot!! They called it “A lottery system.” To even be part of the lottery system they wanted proof that one already belonged to the community and were ranked by points. I turned to Stephen. Who, made it possible for me to participate in the lottery giving my little family a chance to keep what was so important to me. “I was chosen!!!” Soon after I was hired at a local credit union and promoted to management after being there for only 8 months. My best friend asked me to be his wife and after saving for over a year we have purchased our home, here in Davis. They say find the “friendly face in the crowd” but I found more than that. I found a friend who was willing to help me pick myself up when I couldn’t see past what was in front in me. Thanks to Mosaics where my life was changed and I will forever be grateful. “My name is Stephanie, I am a long-time Davis resident, paraprofessional, artist, musician, and nanny. I started taking classes at Mosaics before Covid hit in March of 2020. It was absolutely amazing being able to take various language classes that were offered for free to the community, and then join everyone for a delicious meal prepared by Grace and other volunteers. I met Stephen and Grace the first week that I came to Mosaics, and they were so incredibly kind, gracious, welcoming, and loving. They have truly created a beautiful environment with Mosaics, one in which people of all walks of life come, learn, laugh, play music, and feel accepted. Mosaics has created real community, and is one of the most treasured resources in our city, in my opinion. One can take a class in Portuguese, then a class in Japanese, then a class in Hebrew, Spanish, French, Mandarin etc. I have met so many interesting people while attending classes and dinners at Mosaics, I have learned new languages, and have made lasting friendships. Because of Stephen and Grace’s kindness, generosity, and commitment to community and creating a more equitable, just, loving and kind world, Stephen and Grace were nominated to have their portraits drawn in a series I created of community members who give back. They were two of 20 community members who were nominated for the project, the culminating show of which just transpired. “Mosaics has been a wonderful group. I have been coming to Mosaics with my 5 year old daughter. When I first came, I thought of it only as language classes. But I quickly came to realize the group is much more than that. It’s very welcoming, and Stephen and Grace are so kind and friendly, and make you feel included. We enjoy being able to do classes like Drum and Tai Chi, the special events like cooking classes and holiday gatherings and celebrations, and having dinner together. “During the pandemic, we all felt the hardship of being socially isolated and the boredom of staying home on our own. I was very happy to find the Mosaics group on Meetup.com and connect with like-minded people from all over the US and abroad. Stephen Moon, pastor, teacher, and organizer of the group, made me feel welcome by being very kind, introducing me to other students and by showing interest in me and my culture. Stephen is a very positive person and he is eager to share his knowledge with everyone who attends the classes and Bible study sessions. I am studying Korean and it’s really hard to do it on my own where I live. Classes at Mosaics help me stay motivated and connected with some really awesome people who have the same passion: learning languages and living a meaningful life. Every week I look forward to connecting with everyone on Zoom, study together, and listen to Stephen’s funny and insightful stories about his life in South Korea and the United States, about things that are important in life. I also started teaching Russian at Mosaics thanks to Stephen’s idea and that helped me see how many people are interested in learning Russian. “Intercultural Mosaics has blossomed into something far greater than I could have ever expected. I began as a participant shortly after relocating to Davis for a new job. My college degree in French ignited a passion for foreign languages, and I focus most of my time learning Spanish now, which is what lead me to Intercultural Mosaics. The Spanish classes have been an incredible additional to the studies that I pursue on my own time. I’ve learned new concepts and phrases thanks to the classes. However, the value of Intercultural Mosaics is far greater than the language instruction component. It’s become a group of friends. I knew few people when I arrived in Davis, but now I can say that I have a broad network thanks to Intercultural Mosaics. Our shared enthusiasm for foreign languages connects us all. I have even met up with my fellow participants outside of class time more than once. This group embraces members who come from different faith backgrounds and is eager to learn about new cultures and religions- my own, for instance, as a Jewish person. I have expanded my involvement as the French teacher. Teaching is one of the most rewarding experiences that anyone can have. One of the students is pursuing her own degree in foreign languages, and I have helped her with homework. Helping someone else achieve their professional goals is a truly empowering feeling. “I have been attending classes and events from Intercultural Mosaics weekly for over a year now, and it has been an amazing experience. I am able to meet so many people of different backgrounds who are all excited to share their cultures and languages and also learn from others. I had just moved to Davis when I started attending classes, and due to the pandemic it was difficult to meet people, and Mosaics has helped me connect with like-minded individuals from the area. Everyone is incredibly welcoming and as somebody who loves learning languages, it’s so exciting to be able to attend casual courses in Korean, Spanish, Chinese, and more! I’m grateful to have also been a substitute German teacher and it was a great experience to give back to the community. Classes and events are reliable and well-organized, though each teacher has a lot of freedom in terms of format. “My name is Ying Chih Lin. I joined Intercultural Mosaics in September 2020. At that time, I was looking to connect with people and join groups that shared my interest – learning Korean. I’m very glad I had found Intercultural Mosaics on the platform Meetup. Currently, Intercultural Mosaics offer many language classes via Zoom, and also a Bible study session. During the pandemic period, it’s very easy for people to feel isolated as there were quarantine restrictions and many of the usual personal interactions were limited. Mosaics provide a safe online platform for people who share the same interests to gather together and stay connected. It’s great to be able to learn, laugh, and share our lives during classes. We have students from all over the world, it’s quite amazing. After months of participating in the Korean class, I myself volunteered to be a Chinese Mandarin conversation facilitator for Mosaics. It’s really great to be able to meet and connect with people from different backgrounds and all parts of the world. “I joined Intercultural Mosaics since the end of 2020. By attending the weekly meeting of the Spanish class and the English learner group, I felt connected with people from different countries, enjoyed my reading time with my group, as well as had a good time with Linda, Chad, Stephen, and many other people. I really appreciate Intercultural Mosaics as it created a platform and an opportunity for me to virtually meet with people with various culture and languages, which means a lot to me especially during the pandemic. The weekly meeting became part of my life because it brings me joy and plays an important role in maintaining my mental health with its strong social support. “I’m writing this testimony on behalf of Pastor Stephen Moon. Prior to meeting him and his ministry, I would describe myself as a do-it-yourself Christian. I rarely attended church and had very little contact with other Christians. In June of 2019, I began attending Mosaics Bible study class every Sunday. Since then, I have gained a deeper understanding of the Bible and the teachings of our Lord and Jesus Christ. I also enjoy meeting other like-minded Christians where we each take turns reading from the Bible and pray for one another. In addition, I really enjoy the dinners that the Pastor’s wife makes and the wide variety of food we get to sample every Saturday. Having no family of my own, Pastor Steve and his wife Grace has always made me feel welcome and part of the Intercultural Mosaics family. “Mosaics has been providing free language classes, cooking classes, music classes and the Bible reading class. People who attend the classes come not only from Davis but also from nearby cities. Mosaics has also been providing free meals during the events and the classes. During the pandemic, Mosaics has been offering classes on Zoom and the participants are not only from California, but also from other states and even other countries, such as Japan, China, Korea, Italy, Nigeria, Algeria, Indonesia, Morocco, Iran, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Germany, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Taiwan, Malaysia, Mongolia, India, Colombia, Russia, France, UK. Mosaics also organizes social events such as picnics, hiking, karaoke, Christmas celebration and birthday parties. “The Intercultural Fellowship of Mosaics has been a support network where I always feel welcome. Participating in weekly meetings is a way to glean from different perspectives and offer up my own so all parties involved have a chance to learn from one another. Personally, I am not the most outgoing person, so small groups work well for me and I feel valued with the opportunity to share my experiences. Meeting new people is necessary, though facilitated in a wholesome and friendly environment. An underlying basis of faith and cultural/language exchange keeps everything light-hearted. “I am a retired MD and my wife is a retired teacher. We have been going to Mosaics for 6 years. I started because of a Russian class and then also became involved with a guitar singing group and then Japanese language for the last 2 years. This group has been a nice place to meet people. It is a ministry where people feel the love of Christ. There is no doubt that many people who come are not (yet) believers and who would not be likely to attend a “normal’ church service. People of different faiths or no faith feel loved and accepted and I am sure there is some lasting impact. Through Mosaics, I have met and become friends with people from many countries including Japan, China/Taiwan, South Korea, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, India, Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Israel, Iran, Mexico, Togo and Vietnam to name a few. For about two years, we have been doing an English conversation group. We started in person and when Covid hit we switched to zoom which gave the added benefit of meeting people who are currently not in America but living in some of the countries listed above. Steve and Grace Moon do a great job of leading and hosting this event and also keeping it alive with the challenges of the pandemic. “My name is Jenny Zambrano. I’m originally from Colombia and moved to the USA in 2016. Some months later, I joined the Intercultural Mosaics program as a Spanish teacher. I taught Spanish and shared about the Latino culture, and my beautiful students helped me improve my English and learn about the American culture. So, this community has tremendously supported me in the process of adapting to a new country. In addition, I found acceptance, generosity, and much love. And those values come from the Intercultural Mosaics founders Grace and Dr. Moon. They always lead by example and keep us together as a family. “I joined the Mosaics back in August of 2014. At that time Stephen Moon and his wife Grace were holding meetings in his home in Elk Grove on the weekends. Stephen has a way of making people feel welcome. His group is open for anyone with an interest in learning foreign languages and other subjects. Most of the meetups are informal classes taught by volunteer teachers. He also has periodic hikes, dinners and other outings. His wife Grace cooks wonderful delicious food which keeps people coming back for more. By profession Stephen is a Christian clergyman but people of all religions or no religions are welcome to attend at no cost. I have attended meetups over the years and have been a substitute teacher for Spanish and Guitar when the regular instructors weren’t available. Over the years the meetups have moved out of his house to church buildings and now in the era of Covid online. Being a part of Mosaics has given me an opportunity to meet and to help other people that I might not have met. As an international student whose life is mostly tied to study and research, Mosaics provides me an amazing chance to create connections to the local community and diverse cultures. I joined Mosaics in 2016. At first, I just came for learning Japanese, but soon I realized that Mosaics is more than just language classes. I met with many interesting friends who share their cool stories and precious experience about life, and they are all inspiring. Mosaics has participants from different generations, fields, and cultures, which makes communication never tiresome.
